I have 25 years fulltime experience in therapy as an Army/Federal prison/hospital Chaplain (Major, Retired Reserve), in missions and in youth ministry. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Level 2 (for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), I am an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) Professional Member and I am endorsed by the Evangelical Chaplains Commission.
I use an integrative mix of theories, including Solution Focused, Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) from the University of Denver, the 5 Love Languages, the 8 Habits of Highly Effective Families / Speed of Trust, Our Home Runs/LINKS/PICK, Family Wellness, Couples' Communication, Active Relationships / Choices, Stronger Families (Oxygen), Prepare / Enrich, the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator, Critical Incident Stress Management, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Strength Finders.
All information shared is confidential except the Department of Regulatory Agencies in Colorado requirement to report a plan to hurt oneself or others, including child or elder abuse. I am working towards licensure with them. I passed their jurisprudence exam and applied to be a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate with them in April, 2025.

"Steve is passionate about helping Soldiers and their Families. FranklinCovey is so thankful for the work he has done in the field using the 7/8 Habits for Army Families to strengthen relationships and build stronger, trusting communication during these difficult times."
"Steve is a focused and mature chaplain who consistently provides ministry in difficult situations. He is an example to his peers and a council to leaders of all levels. His presence is an inspiration and motivates those around him. While Steve was my student he worked well with his peers and showed a great willingness to learn and grow. Steve knows how to function well in the complex environment of military ministry and demonstrates ease is pluralistic and multidisciplinary settings. I believe he will thrive in any challenging milieu."
"Steve was one of my Clinical Pastoral Education residents, He persevered through his residency in spite of having some peers who were difficult and dropped out of the residency. He has gone on to serve in Army chaplaincy and has kept in touch, so I have watched him steadily progress in his competency as a chaplain and grow in his pastoral authority and presence. I highly recommend him for his position in correctional chaplaincy, having served in state corrections myself for 6 years."
